The “perfect” personal statement

We are incorrigible know-it-alls, so we recently launched a Quora. Now, whenever we have downtime from slavishly polishing the world’s best essays, we’re answering some of Quora users’ toughest questions with our trademark combination of reliable information and sarcastic style.

Recently, a Quora user asked, “How do I write a perfect personal statement as an international student?” This is a question we get all the time, because we have over a decade of experience helping clients develop exceptional admissions essays. One of our top professors, Deleuzienne, has extensive experience with this – he’s even been working on a  book about admissions essay tips (If you’re in the US, you can read some of it here). In writing our answer, we used some of Deleuzienne’s tips, as well as some of our sparkling expertise in academia, to come up with some tips for the Quora user.

Our hot take? No matter if you’re applying internationally or domestically, undergrad or grad, there’s no such thing as a “perfect” essay. But excellent essays do exist, and they are achievable.  You can write one. You need to leave yourself lots of time, though, and you need to edit painstakingly. If you are not in physical pain, you have not edited enough! (This has not yet been proven by science)

You also have to be specific about why you’re great for THIS program or school – don’t be generic. What else should you do?

If you have a question of your own, you can post it on Quora, or ask us on any of our social media. We’re on Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook, and by the time this blog goes up, you youth will probably have some whole other social media thing we’ll need to make an account for.

We’ve got lots of haters and imitators, so double-check any content you find to make sure it’s on one of our official channels.
